Singapore local companies face great pressures in the current dynamic & uncertain business environment. Shareholders are looking for bottom-line improvements while customers are more demanding on value – high quality, low price and good service; Competitors come from all over the world; Labor markets and laws are tightened. Manufacturing environment has shifted from mass production to High Mix Low Volume (HMLV). These force local companies to seek operational excellence to tackle the challenges.
Lean manufacturing is a powerful way to achieve the business objectives of the company. At the same time, adopting the right automation technologies can further enhance the productivity of the company.  Lean manufacturing and automation can complement each other to achieve higher productivity. Both have the same goals:  to improve operation efficiency and to satisfy customers at the lowest possible cost. To achieve these goals, both disciplines address removing low-value or non-value activities, reducing waste and producing predictable quality.

As a best practice, Lean focuses on maximising resource efficiency in the production process, utilising a systematic approach to eliminate waste and embrace continuous improvement to reap immediate productivity gains and achieve operation excellence. However, many Singapore companies, especially SMEs, face challenges in the implementation of Lean principles. To promote Lean thinking and to help our SMEs embrace the Lean culture, SIMTech has established the Lean Implementation Programme to help companies adopt the principles quickly and effectively. The Programme has been adopted by many companies in our local industries, with successful stories and a compilation of track records. The companies have seen the improvements in waste reduction by as much as 50%.

At the same time, Automation is expected to play a critical role in productivity enhancement. However, there is a huge gap between existing manual processes and automation expectations. This is especially true when the production involves work-pieces of high mix with uncertain geometries and tolerances. In addition, companies may have high expectations on how robots can achieve their business objectives. All these have caused some companies to give up automation entirely or left them with automation systems of little or low utilisation. SIMTech’s Process Automation Design Methodology (PATH) programme helps the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) meet their productivity goals through process assessment and conceptual automation systems design. This is achieved by leveraging SIMTech’s expert knowledge and design tools ,with funding support from SPRING Singapore.

This seminar aims to create awareness of Lean & Automation for our local industries, and share success stories how SIMTech has helped companies to improve their operations and competitiveness through Lean & Automation.
